We arrived in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic in the early afternoon on Friday, rented a car and drove two hours to the north coast, passing through the beautiful mountainous interior.

After we hit the sea and headed west, we quickly found ourselves on potholed dirt roads driving through tiny towns with no road signs. We had to stop and ask for directions in broken Spanglish a few times, but eventually made it to our beautiful hotel.

Shayna and I were the only guests in the entire hotel. This seemed strange because everything was 5 star quality - from the intricately carved mahogany furniture…

Perhaps the original builder had gone bankrupt and the current owners got it very cheap? Or perhaps someone needed somewhere to hide a large amount of cash? In any case, we had our own private beach.

We took a little trip on horseback to explore a bit more of the coast.
