Our last stop before heading to the Mongol border was Ulan-Ude. We stayed in a former soviet style hotel. Last comment 08/13/20.

Ulan-Ude's claim to fame is that it has the largest Lenin head statue in the world. Last comment 01/25/17.

We got a bit turned around trying to find our way to the Mongol border. This sign was no help. Perhaps it was telling us that if our car was on fire then we could head over in this direction? Last comment 04/19/22.

At the border we once again ran into the two Italian motorcyclists and also happened to meet a third Italian motorcyclist who had been all over the world with his bike. Last comment 08/14/20.

The border closed before we got through and there was a car behind us blocking us in, so the only thing to do was to settle in for the night. As we did we saw the tricycle car coming the opposite way from Mongolia! Last comment 04/19/22.

They had completed the rally and were on their way back home. Mongolia wouldn't accept the car as a donation so they were going to try to ditch the car in Russia and fly home. They said that nearly every piece of the engine broke during the trip, and they spent hours each and every day repairing their car. They broke the rear axle in the middle of Siberia and had to sit for 4 days while a new axle was shipped from England. Last comment 01/06/17.

Since we weren't able to go anywhere, we got friendly with a group of British overlanders and made dinner and a camp for the night. Last comment 07/17/22.

This is one of my favorite memories of the trip, swapping travel stories in a cow pasture beside the border crossing between Russian and Mongolia. Last comment 10/19/14.

In the morning we used our propane stove to cook up some coffee before the border opened. Mongolia here we come! Last comment 05/15/22.
