Today was our first day getting in the kayaks! Here we are in the mudroom gearing up.

Melissa was my partner. Considering I was a kayaking rookie and also in charge of steering us through some challenging rows my friends were not so sure if either of us were going to survive..

One of the coolest side benefits of kayaking was that it got us up close to the penguins as they leaped out of the water to and fro.

This afternoon we landed at Whaler's Bay, an abandoned whaling site.

These buildings were used for whale oil processing starting in 1906. After advances in ship technology and the drop in prices during the Great Depression, this site was abandoned in 1931 and was never reoccupied.

The history of the site was interesting but the real excitement in the air here was that this is where we were planning to do our Polar Bear Plunge!
