On our way back to Berlin from Dresden, we stopped by the Koenigstein Fortress.

A massive fortress situated atop a small mountain, the fortress was regarded as unconquerable. During times of crisis it housed state treasure and many works of art as well as the ruling aristocracy.

The fortress was never taken, not even during World War II. It was used as a war prison during both world wars.

We also stopped by the Bastei bridge for some great views of the Elbe river and surrounding countryside.

It was quite peaceful and beautiful from up here. Before we left we had dinner at the panoramic restaurant at the Bastei Berghotel.
