The Hospital San Nicolás de Bari built between 1503 and 1508 was the first hospital in the New World. It is now home to dozens of little green Hispanolian Parrots. Last comment 12/22/16.

Our guide Pascual was 59 years old and has been giving tours of Santo Domingo his entire life. He was lively and very proud of his city's heritage.

These old storefronts are still in operating today as the fancy restaurant district. If we had another night in SD we would have checked it out. Last comment 08/12/20.

The Ozama Fortress is the oldest fort in the Americas. Construction began in 1502 and it was completed in 1505. The castle was designed to guard the entrance to the port of Santo Domingo and defend the city from seaborne enemies. Last comment 04/19/22.

The history of Santo Domingo is very interesting and Pascual was very entertaining, but the heat and the length of the tour were taking their toll. Last comment 07/16/22.

Luckily the next stop was a chocolate "museum" where they explained to us how chocolate was made in the DR. The left jar shows the proportions of ingredients in white chocolate. The top layer is dried milk, then sugar, and then cocoa butter. The middle jar is the ingredients for milk chocolate: dried milk, sugar, cocoa butter, and cocoa powder. The right is dark chocolate, just sugar and cocoa powder.
